If you’ve spent weeks taming high-level dinos, fortifying your base, and fending off raiders or aggressive wild creatures on your favorite server, you’ve probably started wondering how to ascend in ARK 516.2. Ascension is the biggest progression milestone in the game, unlocking higher level caps, exclusive Tek engrams, and permanent buffs that make every part of your ARK playthrough easier. A lot of players get stuck on this step, either because they’re following outdated pre-patch guides or they underestimate how much prep they need for the boss fights. This guide is built on 200+ hours of play on 516.2 servers, both PvE and PvP, so all tips are tested to work with the current patch’s balance changes.
Pre-Requisites You Need to Complete Before You Attempt to Ascend in ARK 516.2
Before you even think about stepping foot in a boss arena, you need to check off a few key requirements to avoid wasting hours of farmed resources. First, make sure you hit minimum level 80 for Gamma Ascension, the easiest tier of ascension available. You can attempt higher tiers later once you have better gear and tames, but Gamma is the best starting point for most players. 516.2 adjusted a lot of the old ascension requirements, so you don’t need to grind as many artifacts as you did in previous patches, but you still need to collect specific tribute items and have a solid team of tames to survive the fight.
To help you keep track, here’s the full checklist for Gamma Ascension on 516.2:
- 10x Artifact of the Brute, 10x Artifact of the Clever, 10x Artifact of the Devourer (note that 516.2 lowered the required count from 15 per artifact, so don’t waste extra time farming more than you need)
- 100x Polymer, 200x Metal Ingots, 50x Element Dust to cover the arena activation fee at any obelisk or terminal
- At least 2 fully imprinted Rexes with 10k+ health and 300%+ melee damage, plus one Yutyrannus to apply courage and fear buffs during the fight
- Full set of Flak Armor, 20+ medical brews, 50+ cooked prime meat, and a long-range rifle to pick off small minions that target you directly
You don’t need a huge team of tames for Gamma, but imprinted ones are non-negotiable. Imprinted tames get a 30% damage resistance and 30% damage boost when their owner is riding them, which makes a huge difference in how long they survive the boss’s attacks. I tried running my first Gamma ascension with non-imprinted Rexes, and they died in half the time even though they had the same stat spread as my imprinted ones later on. Spend the extra day or two breeding and imprinting, it’s worth every minute.
Navigating the Boss Arena Fight for Smooth Ascension
Once you have all your pre-requisites gathered, head to the obelisk or terminal corresponding to the boss you want to fight. For most new players, the Broodmother Lysrix is the easiest first boss, as her attacks are slower and she has less health than the Dragon or Megapithecus in the Gamma tier. Before you activate the arena, set your spawn point right outside the arena entrance with a bed and storage chest. Keep a spare set of tools and armor in the chest just in case you die, so you don’t have to run all the way back to your main base to regear. I made this mistake once, forgot to set my spawn, and lost all my tames and loot when I died and spawned 10 kilometers away from the obelisk.
When you enter the arena, the fight will start with a wave of minions before the boss spawns. Keep your Rexes on passive follow close to you, and use your Yutyrannus’s fear roar to scare off the minions so they don’t chew through your tames’ health before the boss even shows up. Once the boss spawns, switch your Rexes to aggressive target the boss only, and use the Yutyrannus’s courage roar every 30 seconds to keep the damage buff active. Don’t try to kite the boss around the arena, 516.2 increased the boss’s movement speed slightly, so kiting no longer works as well as it used to. Just keep your tames stacked close to the boss, heal them with cooked prime meat if their health drops below 3k, and you’ll take her down in 5 to 10 minutes flat.
When the boss dies, you’ll see a terminal pop up in the center of the arena. Walk up to it, interact with it, and select the ascension option. You’ll get a short cutscene, and then you’ll respawn back at your set spawn point as a level 1 character. Don’t panic when you see your level reset, that’s totally normal, and you keep all your bases, tames, and stored items.
Post-Ascension Perks and First Steps After You Complete the Process
Ascending gives you permanent rewards that make every subsequent playthrough way easier, even if you have to grind levels back up from 1. The biggest reward is the level cap increase of 15 for Gamma Ascension, 30 for Beta, and 45 for Alpha. That means you can level higher than the default max of 100, get more engram points to unlock all the game’s crafting recipes, and stack more stat points to make your character stronger, faster, and more durable. You also unlock exclusive Tek engrams, like the Tek Rifle, Tek Armor, and Tek Teleporter, which let you travel across the map in seconds and defend your base against even the strongest raiders.
Your first priority after ascending is to get back to a decent level as fast as possible. Craft a stone pickaxe and hatchet first, then head to a low-level area with lots of dodos, dilos, and lystrosaurs. Killing these low-level dinos gives you huge XP boosts early on, so you can get back to level 40 in less than an hour if you grind efficiently. If you’re playing on a PvP server, ask a tribe mate or friend to guard you while you’re leveling up, since newly ascended players are easy targets for raiders looking to steal loot or destroy bases.
You also don’t have to redo all the artifact farming if you want to attempt Beta Ascension later. You can keep any extra artifacts you have stored, and use them for your next run once you hit the level requirement of 100 for Beta. A lot of players don’t realize this, and end up farming the same artifacts over and over again for no reason.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Trying to Ascend in ARK 516.2
Even if you follow all the prep steps, it’s easy to make small mistakes that cost you the entire run. The first most common mistake is bringing too many tames into the arena. Each arena has a strict tame limit of 20 for Gamma, and if you bring more than that, the extra tames will be left outside the arena where they’re vulnerable to wild dinos or raiders. I’ve seen players lose 10+ high-level Rexes this way, so count your tames before you activate the portal.
Another big mistake is ignoring patch-specific balance changes for ascension. 516.2 increased the boss’s resistance to ranged weapons, so you can no longer sit back and shoot the boss from a safe spot while your tames tank. You have to get up close with your melee tames to deal enough damage to beat the timer, otherwise the arena will kick you out before you kill the boss. A lot of players follow old guides that recommend ranged kiting, and end up wasting their tribute items because they run out of time.
You also don’t want to rush to Alpha Ascension before you’re ready. Alpha Ascension requires level 120, way stronger tames, and way more resources, and the boss hits hard enough to one-shot non-imprinted Rexes even with 15k health. Start with Gamma, get the 15 extra level caps, build Tek gear and stronger tames, then move to Beta, then Alpha. It’s way less frustrating than wiping 5 times trying to skip tiers. One of my tribe mates tried to jump straight to Alpha when 516.2 first dropped, and he wasted 3 weeks of farming resources before he finally caved and did Gamma first.
At the end of the day, learning how to ascend in ARK 516.2 doesn’t have to be the stressful, grind-heavy process a lot of players make it out to be. As long as you take the time to prep the right tames and resources, follow the boss fight strategies we laid out, and avoid the common mistakes that trip up most new players, you’ll get your first ascension done in no time. Once you’ve done it a few times, you can even help other players on your server run their ascension fights, which is a great way to make friends and build a positive community. Ascension is one of the most satisfying milestones in ARK, and the perks you get from it open up a whole new side of the game you won’t get to experience otherwise.
